A Home Designed for Gathering

Kitchen Addition Designed for Gathering | Haus of Travertine Remodel in Bryan, Texas

Some homes are designed around square footage.
Others are designed around how life actually unfolds inside them.

For this project, our values were rooted in something simple: more room to gather.

This family loves to host — holidays, casual dinners, kids running through the kitchen, friends pulling up chairs that weren’t originally planned for. Their home needed to hold all of that life with ease.

The goal wasn’t excess.
It was intention.

Clean lines. Thoughtful materials. Spaces that feel calm, but deeply lived in.

Reimagining What Was Already There

While many projects focus on reworking the interior of an existing footprint, this home presented a different opportunity.

Rather than trying to force the layout to work within the original walls, the property itself gave us room to think differently.

This project became a thoughtful addition to the existing home — a chance to expand and allow the architecture to better support the way this family lives.

The scope included a complete rework and expansion of the kitchen, along with the addition of a generous new primary suite and half bath.

Of course, additions always come with their own complexities. One of the biggest technical elements was tying the new roofline into the existing structure, ensuring the home felt cohesive rather than like something had simply been added on.

The goal is always for an addition to feel like it was meant to be there all along.

And when done well, the home feels not just larger, but more complete.

We love projects like this — where we get to reimagine an existing home and explore solutions that might not have been obvious at first. Sometimes the best design move isn’t rearranging what’s inside the walls.

Sometimes it’s expanding the walls themselves.

Designing Around Connection

The heart of the home quickly revealed itself: the kitchen.

If you’ve ever hosted even a small gathering, you know the truth — people inevitably end up in the kitchen. It’s where conversations linger, where kids snack before dinner, where friends lean on the counter with a glass of wine while someone finishes cooking.

Because of that, we centered the design around a large custom white oak island.

White oak brings warmth without heaviness. It grounds the room while still feeling light and natural. More importantly, it’s durable — built to withstand the realities of everyday life: homework, spilled juice, dinner prep, and the occasional craft project.

The island became more than a work surface.

It became the anchor of the home’s gathering space.

Simple Materials with Soul

We often believe that simplicity in design means sacrificing character. In reality, the opposite is true.

When you reduce visual noise, the materials themselves begin to speak.

For this project we leaned into a palette that feels quiet but layered.

Handmade zellige tile brought subtle movement and texture to the backsplash. Each tile carries slight imperfections that catch light differently throughout the day, adding depth without overwhelming the space.

Unlacquered brass hardware and fixtures introduced a living finish that will naturally patina over time. Instead of staying frozen in a polished moment, the brass will age alongside the family — growing warmer, darker, and richer with use.

Natural wood tones helped balance the cooler surfaces, giving the home a grounded, welcoming atmosphere.

The intention wasn’t to create a kitchen that felt perfect.

It was to create one that felt alive.

Knowing Where to Invest

A thoughtful home isn’t always about spending more — it’s about spending intentionally.

In this project, the homeowners loved a clean and simple aesthetic. That gave us an opportunity to allocate the budget where it would have the greatest impact.

We saved in places that wouldn’t visually compete with the design — like using prefabricated base cabinets — while investing in the elements that define the experience of the space:

• the custom island
• the material selections
• finishes that bring warmth and depth

This approach allowed us to create a space that feels elevated without unnecessary excess.

A Home That Holds Life Well

What we love most about this project isn’t a single detail.

It’s imagining the life that will unfold here.

Kids sitting at the island after school.
A crowded kitchen during the holidays.
Friends gathered late into the evening while someone pours another glass of wine.

The best homes aren’t designed just to be looked at.

They’re designed to hold people well.

And this one does exactly that.
